Far from the picture-perfect life they boast, royals are subject to and restrained by several royal rules, even including those that stipulate appearance in public. While there seems to be no rule that bans royals from inking themselves, most members of the British Royal Family show up in the limelight with spotless, tattoo-less skin. This adherence to the practice stems from various reasons, most notably long-standing taboo and deep-rooted stigma surrounding body art. But a number of royals hailing from different empires around the world have made bold steps to debut their tattoos in the public, displaying their unique individuality and helping break the social barriers. So, without further ado, here is the list of every royal who has sported artistic tattoos and shown them to the public!
Royals who have tattoos: From Princess Eugenie to Lady Amelia Windsor
Princess Eugenie
Born on 23 March 1990, Princess Eugenie is the daughter of the disgraced Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson. Eugenie, who is the younger sister of Princess Beatrice, is now 12th in the line of succession to the British throne.
Princess Eugenie's behind-the-ear tattoo
Despite being a low-key member of the Royal Family, the Princess always knows how to make headlines with every public appearance. As she attended the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June, royal watchers were quick to notice a small tattoo inked behind her left ear. The tattoo appears to be a small circle, which represents eternity and is apparently a tribute to Her Majesty.
Megan Markle
One of the most popular yet controversial members of the Royal Family, Megan Markle married Prince Harry in 2018 and became the Duchess of Sussex. Before her royal wedding, Markle was a prominent actress best known for her portrayal of Rachel Zane in the American TV legal drama Suits.
Markle once had a unique tattoo
While a majority of Hollywood actors and actresses are open to getting tattoos and showing them publicly, Meghan Markle is a difference. The Duchess prefers long-sleeved gowns and costumes, and royal fans have never spotted any art on Meghan's body. However, she still appears on this list because back in a royal trip to Morocco in 2019, Meghan got a traditional henna tattoo from the local people. The special tattoo was in fact made from natural plant dyes and faded in a short time, so we were unable to have a closer look at it.
Kate Middleton
Born on 9 January 1982, Kate Middleton didn't come from aristocratic roots. After she married university sweetheart, Prince William in 2011, Kate immediately became a favorite royal thanks to her decency and dedication to royal duties. Now a mother of three, the Duchess of Cambridge is still devoted to royal engagements alongside Prince William.
Kate once got a henna tattoo
Like Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton is apparently not a big fan of ineradicable tattoos. She did, however, get a henna tattoo during a royal visit with Prince Louis. The artist who did the tattoo for Kate later reminisced: 'She was saying that it was really pretty. I was just telling her how it works.' Just like Meghan, we have not seen the Duchess sport any other tattoo over the years.
Princess Stephanie of Monaco
Born on 1 February 1965, Princess Stephanie of Monaco was the youngest child of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, and American actress Grace Kelly. In this picture, a then 25-year-old Stephanie was posing as a fashion model. In fact, it was only one of the endeavors she has pursued, along with fashion design, music, and gymnastics.
The girl with the dragon tattoo
Princess Stephanie is undoubtedly one of the most rebellious royals in history, known for her straight personality and tumultuous love life over the year. As a result, it is no surprise that she has inked herself. Sporting a sleek design in the shape of a slim dragon, Stephanie once shared that it was a way to help her recover from the tragic death of her mother. Besides, the Princess also has a floral design around her wrist, and two dolphins on her foot.
Pauline Ducruet
Born on 4 May 1994, Pauline Ducruet is the second child of Princess Stéphanie of Monaco and Daniel Ducruet. Aside from her fashion design business, Pauline is a competitive diver, having represented Monaco at many global competitions
Like mother like daughter
Like mother like daughter? Perhaps, because Pauline Ducruet certainly inherited her mother's wild characteristic and fondness for tattoos. In many photos published on social media, Pauline shows a dainty daisy inked on her arm with a cursive phrase nearby.
Princess Sofia of Sweden
Born on 6 December 1984, Princess Sofia first rose to fame as a glamor model and reality TV star, having featured in many men's magazines. She became a royal of the Swedish empire in 2015 after marrying Prince Carl Philip. The pair have since welcomed three children - Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel and Prince Julian.
She has a sunburst tattoo
Once a famous entertainer, it is no surprise that the Princess has ink marked on her body. At the top of her spine, royal fans can easily notice a large sunburst tattoo. In fact, she has never been ashamed of showing it to the public, even when she tied the knot with Prince Carl Philip in front of many aristocratic and royal figures.
Other tattoos of the Princess
Aside from the visible sunburst tattoo at the base of her neck, the mum of three is also reported to have a small tattoo on her ankle, and another cute one on her arm. Definitely a big fan of body art!
Charlotte Casiraghi
Born on 3 August 1986, Charlotte Casiraghi is the second child and only daughter of Caroline, Princess of Hanover, and Stefano Casiraghi. A wild child, Charlotte has pursued several endeavors in her career, including fashion and modeling, filming, and philosophy, to name a few. Most recently, she starred as the face of luxury designer Chanel's Spring/Summer 2021 campaign.
Star tattoo
Despite being private about her life, Charlotte Casiraghi regularly attends official functions and ceremonies in Monaco. On one such occasion, she was spotted to have a matrix of stars inked on her abdomen.
Prince Frederik of Denmark
Born on 6 May 1968, Crown Prince Frederik is the heir apparent to the Danish throne. He is one of the most active and eminent royals, known for his various talents. Excelling in academics with a bachelor's degree in political science, the Future King of Denmark is also an avid sportsman, having competed in a string of international competitions.
Frederik has a shark tatto
The Prince, who publicly promotes an active lifestyle, is not shy to show off his various tattoos. His most famous ink is a shark marked on his left leg, which has been spotted many times when he participated in sports games. The tattoo is thought to be a tribute to his time in the navy, where he served as an elite frogman.
Lady Amelia Windsor
Born on 24 August 1995, Lady Amelia Windsor is the granddaughter of one of Queen Elizabeth's duke cousins. She is a famous model, having worked with various brands such as Chanel and BVLGARI. In 2017, she appeared on the cover of British fashion magazine Tatler.
Tiger tattoo
Dubbed 'the most beautiful member of the royal family', Lady Amelia Windsor knows the perfect recipe to make her shine in public - tattoos. She has a tiger tattoo on her back, which has been spotted on several of her photoshoots. Along with the tiger, Lady Amelia Windsor's collection of tattoos also includes three bear cubs on her right forearm.
